Burning sticks is an ancient pagan fertility ritual that, if performed above the petri dish, should increase the number of colonies...
...alternatively, if you prefer the rational (and truthful, less exciting) explanation: The glass rod you use to spread the bacteria onto the growth plate needs to be sterile, so you dunk it in alcohol and set it on fire for sterilization. ;) |

But how does burning sticks relate to study of bacteria? I tried to google it, but I guess I rolled badly on my gather information check. (RPG reference I wonder why...) |
